  1. I propose we amass a list of useful French terms for digital tech things – a few of us have decent French, but non-specialist, and IT is a field with a lot of jargon, and quite recently created too. I know we will have translators but it’ll be handy to ad lib with all the right terms, and to pick up what locals are saying ourselves as well. I’ll start with the few words I know off the top of my head:

    computer – ordinateur (m.)
    software – logiciel (m.)
    to download – télécharger

Great idea Matthew…. but who’s going to add to this list??

    • Hello Matthew

Could you tell me how I could ask the directions to a Indian Restaurant in French?

      • “S’il vous plait, y a-t-il des restaurants de cuisine indienne pres d’ici?”

Please, are there any Indian restaurants near here?

  2. There seem to be lots of lists out there on the net already. Here is one of the links I found:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/srajano/dictionaries.html If anyone would like to pull together a list of 10 or 20 key terms this would be much appreciated?

  3. Following our discussions about the importance of creating a storyboard when preparing our film reports in Belgium, I have looked at a few of the many resources online on how to create a storyboard.

As we are using a very basic concept of storyboard without all the higher functionality required by professional film makers, finding a basic tutorial is more difficult than it sounds.

However I think this is a good one and is applicable to the type of films that we want to produce more.http://multimedia.journalism.berkeley.edu/tutorials/starttofinish/storyboarding/

  4. I am looking forward to the trip, the one thing I haven’t got under my belt yet is the movie-making process as I missed last week’s training on that; I will therefore do the catch-up session in Leicester on Friday. I will need to familiarise myself with the survey. I am just wondering how much opportunity I will have to use my French since we will be using interpreters! It will be interesting using video to capture when we ourselves will also be filmed by a film crew.

Wow! I go away for a couple of weeks and it seems that the training for this study trip has come on in leaps and bounds …. I really feel I’ve got some catching up to do! Nevertheless gaining a better understanding of blogging and movie-making will be a real boon, not only for the study trip, but also for the longer term future. I’m really looking forward to the catch-up session on Friday!

    • Further to my last post I’ve now set-up a blog especially for the study trip: http://billsbelgianblog.wordpress.com . As of yet, however, it’s completely empty!!

      • Hi Bill, just taken a look but can’t comment yet as no post made. If you could let us know when you have made your first post we can add comments. It would be good to add the subscribe widget too if you can?

  6. Further to my last post… I’ve just created this as my study trip blog: http://matthewsbelgianestblog.wordpress.com/ altho it has no content as yet.

  7. Hello I found the training session rather interesting.

It is interesting what you can do with modern technolgy these days – photos, fliming, logging information.

A good way to learn French, especially on a train, is via podcast http://www.learnfrenchbypodcast.com/
I’m a bit unsaure of individual team roles ie who will be filming, who will be asking the questions, what others will be doing etc.

I’m looking forward to contributing to the study trip, especially recording journals along the way on my new blog….only 6 days to go!

Training has been challenging and useful. It has widened my insight into european culture and technology. Hopefully, i’ll be able to use surveys and questionnaires in a way that is useful to me and DAIN. Still a bit unsure about who we will be approaching for questioning i.e staff/volunteers etc…and which questions to use…

  10. Training has been well prepared and efficiently delivered.
The variety, pace and amount of information we have had to deal with has been compressed into a relatively short time slot and as a completely raw recruit (new D.A.) this has left too short a time for me (personally) to consolidate my own learning.
i am really enjoying the course and find it interesting and motivating.
Did a short slot as a tutor/mentor alongside Peter Goodwin yesterday; Loved it.
Will say that the student was fairly savvy around the keyboard so that helped a lot.

  12. WOW! Today is overwhelm, particularly with passwords, BUT all ok now. Really, really looking forward to actually meeting our hosts and seeing the projects. The UK has just had it’s latest inflation figures, which are the highest for years, so it will be very interesting to find out how our Belgian friends are coping with unemployment and weekly costs.

The only things that are rattling round my brain are all bits I need to do before we go. The thing I must remember is the basic questions. Each of the visits is still quite unknown what stories will the people have, how interpreter dependant will I be ? In six days I will find out.
